Here is the summary of a conference I gave on the theme: how to decorate your bedroom without breaking the bank? I like to remind people that in decoration, there is no point in following too many rules. There isn’t really a right way to proceed since a successful decor depends on each person’s personality. As a stylist, here is my way of going about arranging a bedroom and
The steps from the arrangement of the furniture, to the choice of furniture through the choice of decorative accessories.
Plan the furniture layout
Look at your empty room and determine what the optimal furniture arrangement would be. Start with the largest piece of furniture which is undoubtedly the bed. Ideally, try to place it so that it is the first sight when entering the room. If there is a decorate your bedroom window in the bedroom, try to make it so that you can look out the window when you are sitting up in bed. Finally, if possible, make sure you can go around the bed on both sides, leaving a space of at least two feet, or 60 cm, around the bed.
Other principles from Feng Shui are not without interest. It is good if the bed is not placed directly in a draft, or between the door and the window. Besides, the further the bed is from the door, the better. Putting the bed under a window is not ideal either, especially in our cold regions of Quebec. These rules of Feng Shui seem the most logical to me. As for the others, which are really very numerous, I leave you free to adapt them or not.
Choose your bedroom furniture
Your two biggest expenses in the bedroom should definitely be the mattress and the bed. During the conference, M2Go reminded us that it was good to try your mattress for at least 15 or 20 minutes to be sure you were making a good purchase.
If you have a small budget, it is easy to do without other pieces of furniture or to find used ones. As a general rule, it is better to have a relatively uncluttered and uncluttered bedroom. A bedside table or shelf accompanied by a wall-mounted bedside lamp, a chest of drawers and an occasional chair can be perfectly sufficient to furnish a bedroom. A DIY bedside table is easy to make.
Consider adapting them to the dimensions of your room. A large, massive headboard or an overly imposing dresser will shrink a small room even more.
Shop in bazaars or classified ads for your chest of drawers, chairs or bedside lamps. Mismatched but well-arranged furniture will add style to the room. This is also an opportunity to save money by diverting objects such as a chair, a ladder, suitcases or concrete blocks used as a bedside table (as in this photo seen on Dwell )
Address the storage issue
Favor closed storage. If the bedroom is small and does not have a built-in closet, opt for cabinets that take advantage of the height and choose light colors so as not to smother the room with overly imposing furniture.
Find the style that will work with your furniture
The style you choose for your bed as well as your chest of drawers or closed wardrobe should already put you on the track of the chosen style of the bedroom. So take inspiration from something you already love and own. Otherwise, match your bedroom style to a painting or fabric that you like (curtains, cushions, duvet cover, rug).
Be careful, however, not to base everything on the choice of duvet cover. We forget that duvet covers have a limited lifespan due to their numerous washes. Make sure you can change your duvet cover one day without having to rearrange all the colors in your room.
Focus on an original decorative accessory
In my opinion, what makes a designer bedroom beautiful is an unexpected element that catches the eye and makes the room unique. Sometimes it can be an architectural element already present such as a brick wall or beautiful wooden beams. Determine what your favorite element will be and make sure to highlight it well.
Some examples: a Berber rug, an original headboard, a beautiful wallpaper could add appeal to your bedroom.
Here are ideas for headboards that are easy to make and inexpensive : fabric (upholstered headboard or hanging fabric), curtains at the head of the bed, stickers, hangers with hanging posters, paint (bed canopy painted, geometric shapes etc.), macramé weaving, shapes made with washi tape, shelves, 4 large frames, a hanging rug, doors, a screen, a large mirror, a grid of moldings, a hanging garment (kimono, dress), a piece of plywood, a pallet, oars, skis, light decoration, etc.
